Dr. Somarathne stands as a distinguished figure in plantations agri value chain management, leveraging over four decades of expertise and a robust academic background. Graduating with a First Class in BA (Economics) from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 1980, he has since held pivotal roles in agricultural research, development, and policy analysis.
With a Masters in Agricultural Economics from Imperial College, University of London, and a PhD in Economics from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Somarathne’s contributions have been multifaceted. His extensive experience includes leadership positions in institutions like the Hector Kobbekaduwe Agrarian Research and Training Institute, Oxfam Australia, and various World Bank and ADB-funded projects.
Dr. Somarathne’s role as the Project Director for the IFAD-funded Smallholder Tea and Rubber Revitalization Project showcases his deep involvement in the Agri value chain. As a Freelance Development Consultant, he continues to contribute significantly to national and international development organizations, emphasizing agricultural policy analysis, marketing, Agro-environmental management, value chain analysis, and sustainable livelihood development. With nearly 140 research publications to his credit, Dr. Somarathne’s expertise is a cornerstone for informed and sustainable development in the agriculture sector, particularly in Sri Lanka.
